A small site called Barton Ramie can be found in the region of Cayo, next to the remains of another Maya village called Baking Pot. It was 1953 when archaeologist Gordon Willey of Harvard University began closely investigating the Maya sites of the Belize River Valley. The book, “The Ancient Maya” by Robert J. Sharer, states that there had been earlier surveys of Maya sites, but none had been as detailed or comprehensive as that of Barton Ramie. Excavations of the remains of the Barton Ramie site showed that even non-elite households were producers and consumers of a rich array of goods, including beautifully painted polychrome pottery, which was once thought to be exclusive possessions of the ruling elite.
