The archaeological site of San Estevan is lying quite close to the modern community of San Estevan in northern Belize, only about one kilometer away. However, this is the place which sadly speaks of how the cultural heritage of the country has been treated previously. At the end of the nineties, big part of the site was destroyed by bulldozers due to insufficiency of a limestone, which was used for the construction of modern roads. It is kind of a paradox that bulldozers uncovered the earliest evidence of the settlement of this site, which was formerly deep under the ground. Thanks to the archaeologists was at least Mound XV with its height of 15 meters saved from the bulldozers. As you can see, sites in Northern Belize are in the big danger because of companies looking for an easy profit.
