Be careful in Belize City

Within the name “Belize District” are two completely different areas. There is the mainland area that stretches around the largest city in the country – Belize City, and there are the islands, which are known as the Cayes. Tourists, as well as citizens of Belize, often try their best to avoid Belize City because of the relatively high crime rate. The islands, however, are among the most visited parts of Belize, along with the Cayo District.

Paradise Islands of Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker

The most famous island of the country is Ambergris Caye that is home to a particularly famous city called San Pedro, where you can find the most luxurious resorts and places to party as well as top-notch restaurants. There is even a Maya site called Marco Gonzales on the island. Lots of tourists prefer to visit Caye Caulker instead, which is less developed, but considerably more romantic. In the last century, Caye Caulker was mainly a backpacker’s island, but nowadays, it is a favorite destination for travelers of every budget who want to enjoy its peaceful atmosphere and tasty local BBQ’s. The well-known backpacker’s motto of “No shirt, no shoes, no problem” still applies.
