Caribbean Grand Slam
Belize is a spectacular destination for fishing. The eastern part of the country is washed by the Caribbean Sea, which means that you can go fishing in almost every part of the country. Not staying next to the sea? Not to worry! You can always jump on a river and try your luck there. When fly-fishing with experienced locals, you may even try to score the Caribbean Grand Slam, which is when an angler catches a bone-fish, a tarpon, and a permit in a single day of fishing.
Fishing resorts
There are a surprisingly large number of resorts that actually target anglers as their guests. Most of these are located in San Pedro on Ambergris Caye, but you may also find some in other parts of Belize. Various accommodations around the country are primarily used by divers and anglers, so always ask before you book. There is almost always some kind of fishing trip or even a fishing package for especially keen anglers. If your accommodation is unable to arrange your trips (usually it is no problem), just use a local tour agency or ask some local fisherman for advice or direction. At the very least, they will be able to recommend a friend who may be able to help you out and make sure you get your fill of fishing in Belize!
Expensive hobby
Does river fishing sound better to you? You aren’t alone. There are plenty of rivers around the country where you can make some incredible catches. Be sure to always ask about day permits so you have no chance of getting in any trouble. Remember, Belize is not a cheap country and the prices of fishing trips and packages are typically aimed at US tourists. If you feel that a price is not reasonable for an offered service, then just go away and try someone else. You may even try to haggle a bit with some of the businessmen or fishermen; you’ve got nothing to lose!
