The famous jade head of Altun Ha
The Altun Ha site covers over eight square kilometers and the remains of more than 500 buildings are there. The complex was inhabited between approximately 900 BC and 1000 AD. Archaeologists have found a total of 43 notable artifacts there, the most interesting of which is the famous jade head, which, according to historians, represents Kinich Ahau, the Maya sun god. The statue stands about 15 cm and weighs 4.4 pounds (more than 2 kg). Its discovery beneath the tomb indicated that a ruler had been laid to rest there. It is also the largest jade statue that has ever been found in the Maya world.
