Tourists do not commonly visit the remains of the Maya settlement of Marco Gonzales, which is located about eight kilometers south of the town of San Pedro on the island of Ambergris Caye. They are extremely difficult to access, but if you are willing to make the trek, it can be a very special experience. During the rainy season and shortly afterward, it is almost impossible to get there. Although Ambergris Caye is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Belize, this place is definitely off the beaten path. The Maya buildings are rather small, reaching a maximum height of only four meters. Nevertheless, a large number of ceramic fragments found in the surrounding swamps, which are covered with mysterious mangroves, makes it clear that this sacred place was perhaps more important to the Maya people than it might seem to be today.
