Less than 20 kilometers northwest of the town of San Ignacio in the Cayo District is the archaeological site of El Pilar, which is right on the border of Belize and Guatemala. It used to be a dangerous area, but safety is no longer such an issue. The settlement had been continuously developed from the 5th century BC up to the 10th century AD. El Pilar used to cover approximately 38 hectares, which makes it one of the largest Maya sites in terms of area. It is the largest Maya center in the area of the Belize River. In the past, it was probably about three times larger than Xunantunich or Baking Pot. You can still see more than a dozen pyramids, making it ideal for someone who loves ruins or photography!
